I was able to read the article in the free preview! Actually there wasn't that much new in it technically, besides maybe being surprised to find out just how many cells the report using for their CFD meshes. I did enjoy the part where Ken Anderson got all of Williams's public corporate filings, and studied their budget and staffing levels while they designed the FW14.

But those images that you've posted definitely show the details of transaxle. It looks like there's a bevel gear in line with the crankshaft behind the clutch to turn the drive to the transverse direction, and what appear to be two pairs of step-up gears to get up to the two transmission shafts. They're positioned one-behind-the-other just a little above the lower trailing link of the rear suspension. The selector drum for shifting is above and a bit forward of the front change-gear shaft.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, I see a rear sway bar mounted just behind the engine and coilover damper units below that.

I took a shot at labeling the parts.

Eddie, I added that pic to the main blog post.

Thanks Eddie.
It certainly looks very much like a transverse axle.
I also agree with your interpretation of the details.
They are not the clearest of images to work from, hardly suprising really but logically thats about the sum of it.

Sam

the print version is very clear - its without doubt transverse

Hi S.C., when will the print version be available? I'm in the States so I opted for the e-zine format. Deliveries by snail mail are too slow!

I'd like to take the opportunity to say that I read and enjoyed "Unraced" and "Autodrome".
